Chemistry professor awarded two fellowships to support sabbatical research in Germany
Professor Robert Bachman has received two fellowships totaling approximately $16,000 in support of his sabbatical research visit to the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany. The first award, a three-month fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, is a renewal of the fellowship Bachman first held as a postdoctoral researcher in 1994. The second award is a two-month grant from the German Academic Exchange Service available to faculty researchers making extended visits to Germany. Both awards were given on the basis of a competitive research proposal and Bachman’s reputation as a scholar.
Chemistry Department Awards announced at Convocation
During the Oct. 12 Convocation, honorary degrees were presented, more than 200 new members were inducted into the Order of Gownsmen, and academic honors and awards were announced. There are three awards the Chemistry Department presents: The Dr. I. Croom Beatty III and Susan Deverough Beatty Prize, The Chemical Rubber Company Handbook Award, and The Louis George Hoff Memorial Scholarship.
Sewanee senior receives American Chemical Society Scholarship
Sewanee senior Josiah "Jaime" Hutton was chosen to receive the 2010 Chattanooga Local Section of the American Chemical Society Scholarship. Jaime is a biochemistry major who plans to attend Vanderbilt University to pursue a Ph.D. in chemical biology. Each year the Chattanooga Section gives a scholarship to one of the students in each of two universities in the section.
Bachman wins grant to advance research
A chemistry professor from Sewanee: The University of the South is one of 35 researchers at Tennessee colleges to receive federal stimulus grants so far from the National Science Foundation. Dr. Robert Bachman said his $276,000 grant will be used to conduct liquid crystal research.
Environmental Chem Major Paul Dixon Awarded Semester-At-Sea Scholarship
Paul Dixon, rising junior Environmental Chemistry major, was awarded the prestigious Parker Presidential Scholarship from the Sea Education Association of Woods Hole, Massachusetts. He will use this scholarship to attend the Semester-At-Sea program entitled "Oceans and Climate," which begins in Woods Hole and culminates in a sail across the Pacific Ocean.
