Dr. Emily White, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, participated in the ceremonial groundbreaking of the Sewanee Constructed Wetlands Research Station on Friday, September 26th. Dr. White will serve as the Monitoring Program Director for this project, carrying out water quality analyses with the help of student researchers. In collaboration with Dr. Deborah McGrath, Professor of Biology, and Dr. Scott Torreano, Professor of Forestry, Dr. White will investigate the ability of constructed wetlands to remove pharmaceuticals and other contaminants of emerging concern from Sewanee’s wastewater.
This project involves a partnership with the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia and The Sewanee Utility District Board of Commissioners. The Coca-Cola Foundation and Coca-Cola Bottling Company United recently awarded the University of the South a water stewardship grant that will help fund this work.
