Environmental Chemistry – Four Year Plan for the B.S.

The Environmental Chemistry Major, part of the Environmental Studies Program, is designed for students that want to explore the chemistry underlying environmental processes and problems. It combines a solid background in the fundamentals of chemistry with coursework in environmentally relevant areas such as biology, geology, forestry, policy, and ethics. The major is ideal for someone interested in careers such as law, consulting, or science policy. It is also an excellent preparation for advanced studies the in environmental sciences.

Notes

  1. Well-prepared students with a strong math background and previous chemistry experience may be invited to enroll in Chemistry 111 (Adv. General Chemistry) or be offered placement directly into Chemistry 102 in the spring semester.
  2. Math placement will be determined by the mathematics department. While no specific math course is required for the degree, Math 101 and 102 as well as Statistics 204 are strongly recommended.
  3. The general distribution requirements (shown below) must be completed by the end of the junior year. Additionally, two physical education courses must be completed by the end of the sophomore year.
  4. Physics 101 and 102 are not required for the B.A. degree but are strongly recommended for the B.S. and for those wishing to pursue advanced study in a chemical or environmental science program.
  5. Two chemistry courses numbered 200 or higher (excluding 301, 401 and 444) are required. The should be chosen in consultation with your major advisor or another member of the chemistry department.
  6. Three support courses related to the environment from beyond chemistry are required for the major. One must be selected from the list of approved courses for Environmental Studies majors. One must be selected from the Humanities and Social Sciences list and one must be selected from the sciences list. The last may be chosen from either list. The student should work with the advisor to ensure that the courses selected form a coherent body of knowledge applicable to the student’s intellectual and career interests.
  7. A capstone course must be completed. This may be done by taking the capstone Envi Studies Seminar (ENST 400) or by completing an approved environmentally-related independent study.

General Distribution Requirements not explicitly included in the major:

  • English 101
  • History 100
  • Philosophy or Religion course
  • Art, Art History, Theater, or Music course
  • Social science course
  • Foreign language course at the 300-level
  • Two physical education courses
